Project: Warehouse Management System (WMS) Vehicle Mounted Unit
(VMU) Baseline Image Upgrade
Roles: Technical Analyst, Functional Analyst, Solution
Architect, Team Lead
Start
Date: 01-May-12 End Date: 20-Aug-12 Months: 4
Project
Details:
Subsequent to Montreal's WMS Go-Live, changes had been
identified that required adjustments to the
baseline image for CV60 Vehicle Mounted Units (VMUs). While
some of the changes had been made
(though not deployed at
Go-Live), others were still pending and to be incorporated to a refreshed
baseline
image scheduled for deployment in spring of 2010.
A similar situation existed in Toronto. In the hope of
standardizing (where possible) and eliminating task
and cost duplication, the VMU Baseline Image Refresh was
extended to include one standard image for
both Montreal and Toronto, and all devices (Intermec
CV30s, CV60s, and Symbol MC9090s) as well as
their permutations of operating systems (Windows XP
Embedded, Mobile 5, and CE). This entailed the

Details:
TBS currently sends Advance Shipping Notifications
(ASN) as one file to MCBC and Labatt on a daily basis.
The business felt
a considerable portion of the data is received well after the fact and
expressed an
interest in obtaining the ASN information for return of
empties more frequently – real time (defined as every
15 min). With the new ASN solution, a maximum of 1760
file sets could be transmitted to MCBC (and
Labatt) on an hourly basis representing a potential of
14080 file sets (header-detail) over any given 8 hour
period. Implementing this solution consisted of: • Clearly identifying the scope and extent of business
requirements (processes, data mapping, conversions, etc.) •
Translating that into functional specifications
(SAP transactions, data mining and mapping,
transmission frequency, etc.) • Elaborating the data/process

run
via SAP Console were
replaced. The impact was enterprise-wide, and affected connectivity issues for
WMS installations in Millers, Coors, and Molson
throughout North America.
The variations in Vehicle-Mounted Units or VMUs

(Telnet servers, SAP Console version compatibility,
virtual and actual names, etc.) significantly
increased
the testing complexity.
My role in this project was to design the role out

Project
Details:
To improve security and better align shop floor
systems with corporate standards and
consolidate/standardize process flow and business functionality, the baseline
image for CV60 devices was
re-visited in the context of the WMS@CDM project.
The baseline image was revamped taking into account
new and evolved business functionality including
added benefits such as
• Upgrading the SAP GUI to 7.2 patch level 4
(rendering it at par with corporate desktop solutions),
• Simplifying the Contingency solution code
maintenance, and expanding the scope to include both
Montreal and Toronto in once solution code base,
• Implementing SAP Single Sign On
(SSO) for VMUs on a global scale),
• Simplifying the maintenance of the ever evolving SAP
Logon.ini,
• Moving away from the generic user ID and forcing
each user to authenticate him/herself to the network
(allowing security concerns
to be addressed at the AD level – rather than the device level while).
Almost $100K of previously committed funds for this
exercise was returned to the project fund by adopting
and implementing the recommended approach.
This entailed the following:
• Perform needs assessment
• Generation of business requirements documents
• Identify gaps and recommend (business process,
functional or technical) alternatives for addressing the
gaps
• Design and validate business process flow
• Identify source and target data, modifications (data
massaging) required

Details:
Implementation of a lift truck impact monitoring
solution (sensors cabled to vehicle mounted computers)
using a wireless network to transmit data to Microsoft SQL
Server backend in the corporate datacenter.
In addition to impact monitoring, capturing measuring
point values, and reporting on driver behavior
(ensuring compliance Ontario
Health and Safety Board driver assessment), the solution migrates a former
paper-based daily inspection procedure to one that manages data
in SQL Server improving ongoing
vehicle maintenance.
The information gathered is visible from a web-based
dashboard (that can be integrated with SharePoint
as web parts), and alerts can be received on cell phones
for critical levels of configured events.
Shockwatch allows user definable events (measuring
points) to trigger alerts when specific thresholds have
been exceeded.
The data (for example speed, temperature, battery
voltage, impact – measured in G's, etc.) is monitored by
sensors, can be cumulated (when out of network range), and
ultimately synchronized with a SQL Server
backend (where it can be reviewed and reported on). The
values gathered for the various triggered events
can subsequently be passed to SAP as equipment measuring
points.
This entailed the following:

upgraded production system was delivered well ahead of
schedule with no business disruption whatsoever.
Although the upgrade
was purely technical in nature (no new functionality), its
downtime-minimized

16 levels of patching that had been neglected,
Complexities associated with IS-BEV,
Massive amounts
of data (especially COEP conversion) since no archiving had ever been
performed. A

Details:
• The WMS contingency solutions (Phases I and II) were
successfully delivered prior to the Toronto Go-
Live. To
minimize risk, a text-based version (Phase I) of the solution was deployed in
the baseline image
for Go-Live (even though the SQL Server version – Phase
II was ready). With the positive user
experience, business acceptance testing was completed shortly
after Go-Live, and the text based solution
never saw its way to production (in favor of the SQL
version).
• Phase II (VMU data capture on local SQL Server CE
that replicates with a middleware central instance
that posts to SAP) is the current production standard for
all business continuity scenarios in WMS
deployments. Considering the ability to maintain warehouse
business operations in completely
disconnected mode, the contingency solution has become an attractive
prospect for other divisions (MCBC
Canada,
MCBC-UK, and MillerCoors).
• Deployment and rollout of the Contingency Phase II
solution was closely tied to the VMU Baseline Image
Refresh project that covers shop floor warehouse
operations for both Toronto and Montreal.
• A few minor changes had to be implemented as a
result of Montreal's business acceptance testing: the
impact of using SAP TRM – Task Resource Management in
Montreal but not in Toronto.
